School District's celebration of its 150th anniversary. In celebration
of this milestone, the Signature Ice Sculpture for this year's Winter
Carnival unveiled on Friday, January 27, at Rice Park
in downtown Saint Paul, is a replica of the Irving School. Built
in 1885 and named after Washington Irving, the school was one of the
most striking of the district's early buildings.
At the unveiling, Saint Paul School Board Chair Elona Street-Stewart provided a brief history of the school district, while the Humboldt
High School Marching Band and Como Park Senior High School Choir
provided entertainment.
"This is a huge milestone for Saint Paul Public Schools," said
Street-Stewart. "The group of citizens that founded the district had
academic excellence as their goal in 1856, and we have continued that
tradition today while serving more than 41,000 students and providing
every single one of them with a world of opportunities."
The 150th Anniversary Celebration will continue throughout the year
with more events such as parades, exhibits, and the world's largest ice
cream social. Please call (651) 767-8101.
