|  | Board of Education narrows field of candidates to fill empty seat 5/17/2005 4:45 PMThe process to find a candidate to fill the vacant Saint Paul Board of Education seat moved forward today (Tuesday, May 17).
The board voted to bring back five candidates for a second round of interviews on Monday, May 23. A final choice on who will fill the empty seat is expected to be made by the board immediately following the second interviews.
The final five candidates are:
Jennifer Armstrong, freelance writer, web designer, communications professional and past president of the Network of Education Action Teams (NEAT).
Andrew J. Dawkins, director of neighborhood housing and property improvement for the city of Saint Paul. He is a former state representative for District 65A and was the DFL-endorsed candidate for Saint Paul mayor in 1993, losing to Norm Coleman.
Gilbert de la O, former member of the St. Paul school board. He works with and for youth and families.
William K. Finney, retired Chief of Police for Saint Paul and former SPPS Board of Education member.
Brian Joyce, assistant manager for Walgreens. He is also an actor and director.
The candidate selected by the board will fill out the term of Toni Carter on the board. Carter resigned in March from the board after she won a special election to the Ramsey County Board.
