|  | Superintendent recommends principals for six elementary schools
6/22/2004 4:00 PMSaint Paul Public Schools Superintendent Patricia Harvey announced today her recommendations to the Board of Education to fill principal openings at six Saint Paul public elementary schools.
I am thrilled to bring forward the names of these six talented and dedicated educators, said Harvey. They all have diverse backgrounds, expertise and experience. I know that they will make significant contributions to our students, schools and community.
All six educators are or were participants of the districts Leadership Institute. They are:
Yolanda Murphy will be the new principal at Battle Creek Elementary School. Murphy has been the assistant principal at Daytons Bluff Achievement Plus Elementary School since 2001. She has also been employed in the district as a teacher, an administrative intern and a coach. Murphy will replace Rita Thofern.
John Garcia will be the new principal at Galtier Science/Mathematics Technology Magnet. Garcia spent the last school year working as an administrative intern for the district. Prior to joining the Saint Paul Public Schools, he was employed by Amgen, Inc., where he served as academic liaison for the Mayo Clinic. He has also taught in the Minneapolis Public Schools, Ann Arbor Public Schools in Ann Arbor, Mich.; and in the Kansas City Public Schools. Garcia will replace Virginia Zoncki-Bunker.
Cleva Jobe will be the new principal at Groveland Elementary School. Jobe has been the assistant principal at Capitol Hill Magnet since 2002. Prior to that, she held several positions throughout the district, including assistant principal and media specialist at Arlington Senior High School. She has also served as a media specialist at several schools throughout the district and as a special education teacher at Monroe Community School. Jobe will replace Julie Cox.
Yeu Vang will be the new principal at J.J. Hill Montessori Magnet, where she spent the last year as an administrative intern. Prior to joining J.J. Hill, Vang worked as a program manager with the districts English Language Learner program, an administrative intern and as a teacher at North End Elementary School. Vang will replace Paul Osterlund.
Steve Unowsky will be the new principal at Linwood A+ Elementary School. Unowsky spent last year as assistant principal at Dhahran Middle School in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia. Prior to that, he was assistant principal at Annunciation School in Minneapolis. Unowsky will replace Jason Fugere.
Christine Osorio will be the new principal at Paul and Sheila Wellstone Elementary School. Osorio has been the assistant principal at Adams Spanish Immersion School since 2002. Prior to that, she served as an administrative intern and ELL teacher in the district. Osorio will replace Raymond Yu.
The Saint Paul Board of Education is expected to vote on the recommendations at todays (Tuesday, June 22) school board meeting.
