Board of Education adopts 2004-05 budget
6/23/2004 10:50 AM

The Saint Paul Board of Education adopted a school district budget for the 2004-05 school year at their meeting Tuesday, June 22. The total $565 million budget includes $12 million in reductions for the coming school year.

These cuts are necessary, according to Lois Rockney, executive director of budget and finance for the district, because of declining enrollment and state funding that lags behind increased operating costs.

Cuts include:

- $4 million in reductions to school budgets as decided by school site councils;

- $500,000 in reductions due to the closing of the Wilson Junior High School program. The Wilson building will be used to house the LEAP English Academy, which helps students age 15-22 learn English;

- $1.4 million in reductions to districtwide services including Athletics, the English Language Learner program and Special Education; and

- $2.9 million in reductions to the operating budget which will be attained through energy conservation and negotiation with vendors.

The majority of the remaining cuts will be made through funding shifts.
