Superintendent recommends four new principals
5/25/2005 10:40 AM

Saint Paul Public Schools Superintendent Patricia Harvey has announced her recommendations to the Board of Education to fill principal openings at two high schools, a middle school and an elementary school.

Patricia Murphy is Harvey's choice to lead Arlington Senior High School, where she worked as a Title I coordinator/administrator from 2002-2004. Murphy is currently an assistant principal at Humboldt Senior High School, where she has worked since 2004. Prior to coming to the Saint Paul Public Schools, she held leadership positions in the Robbinsdale, Minn., area school district and with Augsburg College. Murphy also has extensive experience working with international schools in Kuwait, Greece and the United Arab Emirates. She will replace Bill Dunn, who is retiring.

Daniel Mesick is Harvey's choice to be principal at Como Park Senior High School. Mesick is currently an assistant principal on special assignment, working as a scheduling specialist with the school district. He has been with the Saint Paul Public Schools since 1985 and has worked as a teacher at Hazel Park Middle School (1985-1994) and as an administrative intern at Johnson Senior High School (1994-1995) and Ramsey Junior High School (1995-1998), and an assistant principal at Highland Park Senior High School (1998-2003). He will replace Brad Manor, who is the school’s interim principal this year.

Jill Gebeke is Harvey's choice to be the new principal at Cleveland Quality Middle School. Gebeke is currently an assistant principal at Humboldt Junior High School, a position she has held since 1999. Gebeke's previous experience includes work as an administrative intern at Murray Junior High School (1998-1999), a math teacher at Arlington Senior High School (1996-1998), a math teacher at Humboldt Junior High School (1986-1996) and more than 10 years as an athletics coach at the Humboldt Secondary Complex. Gebeke was also the co-coach of the Saint Paul Blaze hockey team, the first all-girls high school hockey team in Saint Paul. She will replace Aaron Rupert, who is retiring.

Howard Wilson, who has served as principal at Longfellow Humanities Magnet since 1998, is Harvey's choice to be the new principal at Four Seasons Elementary School. Wilson began his career as a classroom teacher in Brisbane, Australia, (1977) and came to the Saint Paul Public Schools in 1997 as an assistant to the principal at Mississippi Creative Arts Magnet School. He has also served as an assistant principal at Capitol Hill Magnet School (1997-1998) and an adjunct professor of education at Hamline University's Graduate School of Education. Wilson will replace Joan Rourke, who is retiring. Harvey has not recommended anyone to replace Wilson at Longfellow Humanities Magnet.

Each candidate was selected from three finalists, who were interviewed and recommended to Harvey by each school's site council.

The Saint Paul Board of Education is expected to vote on the recommendations for Murphy, Gebeke and Mesick at an upcoming school board meeting. The board has already approved Wilson's appointment.
