Achievement data shows growth, room for improvement in Saint Paul's schools

The Minnesota Department of Education today (Thursday, Aug. 26) released information about success and opportunities for growth at schools throughout the state.

According to Saint Paul Public Schools Superintendent Patricia Harvey, the information confirmed what she already knows: even though Saint Paul's schools are making impressive improvements, there is still much work to do.

"We know what works in Saint Paul," said Harvey. "Our intensive curriculum, staff training and partnerships with our community are paying off. Overall test scores in our schools are improving, and we remain focused on maintaining our rising achievement."

The information released by the state today included a list of schools not making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). Minnesota's AYP plan, which is part of the federal No Child Left Behind Law, sets minimum standards all schools and districts must meet for all of their students. To qualify as meeting AYP, all students in a school--as well as all students in other categories based on ethnicity, income, language background and special education status--must either meet these standards or show clear progress toward meeting them.

While schools in Saint Paul were included on the state's list, Harvey said she is confident that the district is heading in the right direction. "Accountability is not new to our schools," she said. "We know how to improve schools, we are making progress, and we will continue to improve."

Achievement data for the Saint Paul Public Schools follows.

Since 1999, the percent of students in the Saint Paul Public Schools with "Solid Grade Level Skills" or better on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments has increased by:

o 21 percentage points in Grade 3 Reading;

o 19 percentage points in Grade 5 Reading;

o 21 percentage points in Grade 3 Math; and

o 29 percentage points in Grade 5 Math.


Since 1999, the percent of students passing the Minnesota Basic Skills Test on the first attempt has increased by:

o 8 percentage points in Grade 8 Reading and

o 15 percentage points Grade 10 Writing.
