School starts Tuesday, Sept. 7. Are you ready?
7/26/2004 9:35 AM

Parents, are your children ready to start school Tuesday, Sept. 7? Time is running out to enroll in a school, find a kindergarten or get immunized.

If you don't know which school your child is supposed to attend when school starts, or if you are new to the school district, call the Saint Paul Public Schools Student Placement Center at (651) 632-3701.

The Student Placement Center is located at 2102 University Ave. W. and has staff on hand to provide one-on-one services to prepare families for the upcoming school year.

Those services include:

- Early Childhood Screening, which is required by state law. Without it, children cannot enroll in school;

- Step-by-step help finding a school that meets families' needs. Enrolling in the right school with the right services is the first step toward academic success; and

- Immunizations, which are required by state law. Many insurance programs, including state-funded insurance, pay for the cost. Without insurance, immunizations cost $10 per shot. Parents whose children will be immunized must bring their childrens Immunization Record.

Why is it important for parents to prepare now for the next school year? Because the Student Placement Center gets really busy right before school starts. That can mean parents standing in long lines, according to Jill Cacy, director of the Student Placement Center.

"The closer we get to the first day of school, the longer our lines become," said Cacy. "We're open now and we're ready to help families get ready for the first day of school."

The Student Placement Center is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information or to make an appointment, call (651) 632-3701.
