Saint Paul Public Schools offer immediate placement of Success Academy students
5/31/2000 10:25 AM

In an effort to help the students and families displaced by the closing of Success Academy Charter School, the Saint Paul Public Schools are offering to register students in one of two school sites through the end of the school year. The school district also is offering to hire licensed Success Academy staff as substitute teachers to work with the displaced students through the end of the school year.

The Saint Paul Public School District is setting up a satellite Student Placement Center site at Ames Elementary School, 1760 Ames Place, for Success Academy families. The school district will temporarily enroll students in other schools to complete the Saint Paul Public Schools regular school year. Parents or guardians should accompany their students to Ames or the school district’s Student Placement Center at 2102 University Ave. W. to enroll their child. If possible, parents should bring their students’ immunization records. Students will be placed at one of two school sites—Crossroads Elementary school or the school district site located at 930 E. Geranium Ave.—and will try to keep students together with Success Academy staff for the rest of the school year. For more information, Success Academy families can call the Elementary Student Placement Center at (651) 632-3760.

The Saint Paul Public Schools will hire licensed Success Academy teachers as substitute teachers to work with the displaced Success Academy students through the end of the school year. Success Academy staff may call the Saint Paul Public Schools Human Resources office at (651) 767-8200. When calling, they should identify themselves as Success Academy staff.

The Saint Paul Public Schools will work to find permanent placement for students and families who wish to remain in the Saint Paul Public Schools for the coming school year.

Charter schools are public schools funded by the state. They are independently run and are free of many of the regulations that govern local school districts. Last week, the Saint Paul Public Schools opted not to renew its sponsorship of Success Academy due to concerns with the school’s financial management and student achievement. Success Academy officials closed the school Tuesday. The Success Academy school year would’ve continued through June 30.
