| | Superintendent Harvey Announces She’ll Stay in Saint Paul 3/18/2002 11:05 AMSaint Paul Public Schools Superintendent Pat Harvey announced today that she has taken herself out of consideration for the Portland, Oregon superintendent position and will stay in Saint Paul to complete the education reform work she started here nearly three years ago.
“Saint Paul is my home,” Harvey said with Saint Paul Mayor Randy Kelly and Board of Education Chairman Al Oertwig by her side. “More importantly, Saint Paul is well on its way to making dramatic educational improvements for our students, and I plan to be here to see that work continue. There isn’t a better place to do the work I have set out to do on behalf of kids than in Saint Paul.”
Harvey expressed her reluctance to consider the Portland position because of her commitment to Saint Paul Public Schools and its students. The outpouring of support for education shown by the Saint Paul over the last two weeks confirmed for her, she said, that this is the right place for her to work and live.
Saint Paul Mayor Randy Kelly noted his relief at hearing Harvey’s decision. “I am pleased that Dr. Harvey has decided to stay in Saint Paul,” said Mayor Randy Kelly. “This is a city that cares deeply for education, and we are going to work even harder to ensure that Dr. Harvey has the support she needs to bring world-class education to our students.”
