| | Saint Paul Superintendent and Mayor Announce Citywide Book Club 2/1/2002 10:15 AMSaint Paul Public Schools Superintendent Pat Harvey and Mayor Randy Kelly today announced an expansion of the Saint Paul Reads initiative that will aim to get the entire city of Saint Paul reading and talking about the same book through a citywide book club called Saint Paul Reads One Book.
Throughout February, which is I Love to Read Month, nominations will be collected for the one book that the entire City of Saint Paul will be invited to read. The easiest way to nominate a book is electronically on the Saint Paul Reads Web site at www.saintpaulreads.org.
The first place to submit nominations in person will be Saturday, February 2, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Saint Paul Parent Information Fair at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in downtown Saint Paul. At the fair, thousands of parents will be visiting more than 150 public, private, charter and parochial school booths as they choose the first or next school for their children.
Nomination forms also will be available at Saint Paul branch libraries, and at many bookstores and coffee shops in Saint Paul, including the Red Balloon, Black Bear Crossing, Bound To Be Read, Borders Books, Ruminator Books, Amore Coffee House, Java Drive, Starbucks, and Dunn Brothers. The Minnesota Wild also will be distributing nomination forms at home games in February. The last day to nominate a book will be February 28.
The only criteria for nominating a book is that it should have broad appeal to young adult and older readers. It could be a classic, a biography of a local hero, a novel by a Saint Paul author, or anything else people want to nominate. The nominations will be screened by a team, which will include curriculum and literacy experts, as well as high school students and representatives of Saint Paul’s many cultures. The screening team will make several recommendations to Dr. Harvey and Mayor Kelly, who will make the final book selection in March.
