| | Grant sends hundreds of Saint Paul students to Twin Cities theaters 11/20/2002 10:50 AMThanks to a four-year, $368,578 grant from the U.S. Department of Education, hundreds of students in grades 6, 7 and 8 at Saint Paul’s Humboldt Junior High and Wilson Middle School will soon be attending plays at the Guthrie, the Old Log and 12 other Twin Cities theaters.
Saint Paul Public Schools secured the grant and will partner with area theaters and Project SUCCESS, a Minneapolis-based arts and education nonprofit organization, to take students to plays beginning the 2003-04 school year. Before and after each play, students, teachers and Project SUCCESS staff will discuss what students can learn from characters in the plays. The goal of the program is to help students identify short- and long-term goals for personal and academic success.
After the first year, the grant money will also be used to fund student theater productions at each school. This is the first time Saint Paul Schools has received a grant for this program.
