Saint Paul kindergartners learn to use wireless phones during emergencies
5/9/2003 11:05 AM

Saint Paul Public Schools, Verizon Wireless and Smarter Safer Kids, Inc., are teaming up in an effort to educate kindergartners about when and how to seek help during emergencies. On May 13 and May 14, representatives from Smarter Safer Kids, Inc. and Verizon Wireless will hold safety classes for students at Homecroft Elementary, Open School and Webster Magnet. This is the first time Saint Paul Public Schools students will hear a presentation about wireless phone safety.

“Teaching young students how to respond during an emergency is an invaluable community service,” said Will Waterkamp, director of Safety and Security for the school district. “No one is too young to learn about safety.”

The classes will include:

• Discussions about when to call 9-1-1—a dog chewing on a teddy bear is not an emergency, a person breaking into a neighbor’s house is;

• How to dial 9-1-1 from a wireless phone and how it is different from a landline phone; and

• Distribution of “My Very Own Phone Book,” which enables children too young to read to find emergency phone numbers.
