| | Humboldt High JROTC students to deliver 'blessings' to students in Panama 11/2/2004 1:45 PMThe way Mirna Santos sees it, students at Humboldt Senior High School are well positioned to succeed.
They receive plenty of support from teachers and staff, classrooms are fully stocked with learning resources, and finding an extra-curricular activity in which to participate is easy.
"When you stop an think about it, we are blessed," says Santos, a junior. "There are a lot of students around the world who don't have what we have. It's sad. That's why we're trying to help them."
Santos is leading an effort by the Humboldt Army JROTC (Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps) to collect school supplies, clothing and athletic equipment for needy students in Panama.
Later this month, two Humboldt students will travel to a school in Panama with a delegation of state leaders and the Minnesota National Guard. They will deliver the supplies to the school's 815 needy students.
Christopher Vasquez, one of the students who will travel to Central America, says he's excited for the trip, but even more excited to help students at the school. "I want to help prepare the kids for their future," he said. "Basically, it's all about helping out as much as possible. They don't have a lot of stuff, so anything we can bring them will make a big difference in their lives."
The Humboldt JROTC class is accepting donations, including school supplies, clothing, first-aid equipment and athletic equipment for children ages 5-13, through 1 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5.
To make a donation, visit Humboldt Senior High School, 30 E. Baker St., or call (651) 293-8600.
