Saint Paul students take center stage at Ordway Center
4/15/2004 2:30 PM

While America anxiously awaits the discovery of the next superstar on televisions popular American Idol, Saint Paul Public Schools might just beat them to it.

Saint Pauls 13th Annual Honors Concert & Art Exhibit showcases the talents of the best of the best high school musicians, vocalists and artists in the Saint Paul Public Schools. More than 300 Saint Paul students will participate in the event downtown Saint Paul on Tuesday, April 27, 2004.

An Artists Reception will kick off the evening from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Minnesota Museum of American Art, fifth floor, Landmark Center 75 W. Fifth St., Saint Paul. Paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures and other works of art by Saint Paul Public Schools students were judged and selected for the exhibit by professional artists. The student artwork will be on exhibit at the museum for public viewing from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday from April 28 through May 11. Student work chosen for the visual arts show is presented in collaboration with the Minnesota Museum of American Art.

A World Party precedes the Honors Concert from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. at Ordway Center for the Performing Arts, Marzitelli Foyer, 345 Washington St., Saint Paul. The World Party features small instrumental and vocal student ensembles from Saint Paul elementary and junior high schools.

The Honors Concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in Ordway Centers Main Hall and features performances by a citywide orchestra, band and choir. Students were selected to perform from special auditions held earlier this spring. Students participating in the concert will perform under the direction of professional conductors.

We are thrilled to once again highlight the talent of so many students, says David Galligan, president and CEO of Ordway Center. I hope that these talented artists will always treasure the memory of playing on the Ordway Center stage, and I know audiences will enjoy this opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments.

The Honors Concert and Art Exhibit highlights the fact that Saint Paul Public Schools and our Saint Paul community put a high value on the arts, said Saint Paul Public Schools Superintendent Patricia Harvey. This event not only showcases the talents of students, it is a way to increase student achievement by building students self-discipline and confidence.

Concert tickets are $5 general admission and are available at the Ordway Center Box Office, 345 Washington St., Saint Paul; by phone at 651-224-4222, TDD/TTY: 651-282-3100; or on the Ordway Center Web site.
