5th and 6th grades at Horace Mann completed Get Out The Vote project.
11/6/2006 12:47 PM

Monday, November 6, 2006, students in the 5th and 6th grades at Horace Mann School (K-6) completed their hard work on an exciting project entitled, “Get Out The Vote" which culminated with a program at school on Monday, November 6th at 1 p.m.

The program included speeches by several Horace Mann School students on the topic “Power of the Vote!”  In addition, students and the audience sang Patriotic Songs and “The Importance Of Voting In Our Republic” was discussed by several elected officials.

"So many parents and members of the community told me how proud they were of our students and congratulated Horace Mann School for a truly educational and meaningful program.  Many were truly moved by the powerful messages in the student speeches; the thoughtful comments by Peter Hutchinson, Betty McCollum, Richard Cohen, Emory Dively, Michael Paymar, and Christine Van Tassel; the presentation of the colors by the Cretin Derham Hall Color Guard; and, the singing of Patriotic Songs," according to Principal Scott.

The teaching model for this project is from Kids Voting USA.  According to Horace Mann School 6th Grade Teacher Judy Ronnei, “Kids Voting USA" is a national nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that teaches students about the concepts of citizenship, civic responsibility, democracy and the importance of political participation.

The Kids Voting USA program combines innovative classroom activities with an authentic voting experience to help students gain knowledge, skills and confidence to be active citizens. What makes the program truly unique is that students have the opportunity to cast a Kids Voting ballot on Election Day, voting on the same candidates and issues as the adults.

Kids Voting USA civics activities introduce students to the concepts of citizenship in the earliest grades and continue throughout their school years. This ongoing education develops strong skills and habits for living in a democracy.”

Thank You 5th and 6th Graders, and your teachers (Mrs. Ronnei, Mrs. Meuwissen, and Mr. Nelson) for a wonderful program and a job well done!

(Note:  The Hatch, Pawlenty, Kennedy, Kobuchar, and all other local candidate campaigns were invited to participate.)
