Meetings address proposed changes to grade points and graduation distinctions
4/20/2004 11:40 AM

Officials at the Saint Paul Public Schools are proposing changing grade point calculations and graduation distinctions. And they want public feedback on their plan, which is designed to encourage more students to take challenging classes.

Two public meetings are planned:

7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 28
Hazel Park Middle School Library,
1140 White Bear Ave.

7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 29
Central High School Cafeteria
275 N. Lexington Pkwy.

If accepted by the school board, the proposal will basically eliminate weighted grades, which give students the opportunity to earn additional points on their grade point averages (GPAs) for taking more rigorous classes. It would also eliminate the practice of reporting students' class rank. Instead, students could earn recognition as graduating "with high honors," "with honors" or "with distinction" in a particular subject area.

Depending on what happens at the community meetings, a version of the proposal, which was developed by the district's seven high school principals and district staff, will be considered by the school board at its Committee of the Board meeting at 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 10, at the Administration Building, 360 Colborne St.

More information about the proposal, and the opportunity to provide feedback, is available at www.spps.org.
