The scholarship is awarded by the Horacio Algers Association, which seeks to assist students who have:
• demonstrated integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity;
• strength of character;
• financial need;
• a good academic record;
• commitment to pursue a college education; and
• a desire to contribute to society.
Anderson recently accepted the scholarship at a dinner in Washington, D.C., where she shared her inspirational story with Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, "Magnum, P.I." star Tom Selleck and astronaut Buzz Aldrin.
Anderson is active in the St. Olaf College GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Program) program. It's a federally funded program that works with teachers, community members, students and families to increase the number of students who are prepared to enroll and succeed in a postsecondary program.
Since 1999, the program has served more than 300 Humboldt Senior High School students.
