| | Event celebrates Minnesota's changing face 4/21/2004 9:30 AMIs there a better way for people to get to know their neighbors than a good old fashioned celebration? Employees of the Saint Paul Public Schools don't think so.
That's why the district will hold a Multicultural Celebration from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at Arlington High School, 1495 Rice St.
The free, public event will feature entertainment, food and festivities that originated in countries around the world and can now be found in homes and schools throughout Saint Paul, including:
- A fashion show featuring traditional ethnic garb from near and far;
- Free food including Hmong rice steam rolls, Mexican mole poblano, Vietnamese egg roles, Salvadorian pupusas, and American hot dogs and collard greens;
- Entertainment including Mexican cowboy dancing, African American story telling and music; and
- Activities including Hmong hat making, African American storytelling and games.
Saint Paul Public Schools educates students from around the world who speak more than 95 different languages and dialects. Organizers of the Multicultural Celebration hope the event provides an opportunity to learn about other cultures, and how they impact the way students are taught in schools.
Last year, the celebration drew more than 1,000 parents, students and community members from throughout the metro.
