Saint Paul, Minn – The United States Navy recently recognized Arlington Senior High School’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (NJROTC) program as a Distinguished Unit for 2008. This is the fifth consecutive year that the Arlington unit has received distinguished honors.
The Distinguished Unit award is the highest recognition given by the Navy to a high school and is an honor only 20 percent of the 619 NJROTC units nationwide achieve. Selection factors include community service, academics and overall drill performance.
The national NJROTC program, established in 1964, has the goal of instilling in United States high school students the values of citizenship, service to their country, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment.
Arlington is one of only three schools in Minnesota offering the NJROTC program. Their curriculum emphasizes leadership development and introduces the fundamentals of naval operations. Classroom instruction is augmented throughout the school year by community service activities, drill competition, field meets and other military training.
The cadets at Arlington were honored this year for their dedication to the community of Saint Paul, performance at regional field meets and demonstrations of leadership throughout the year.
Arlington’s JROTC Color Guard presented the colors in the opening ceremony for the Feast of Council at the Saint Paul Valley Scottish Rite of Freemasonry Temple in March. The Captain of the color guard team, Arlington senior Cadet LT Jan Samreth, was honored after the presentation, receiving the Scottish Rite JROTC Award for Americanism.
