|  | | Battle Creek Environmental Magnet School |  | As the first environmental magnet school in the state, Battle Creek has developed a rigorous, standards-based curriculum emphasizing hands-on learning with a focus on environmental science topics. The forest and groomed trails of the Battle Creek Regional Park, which the school borders, are used extensively by students and staff for a variety of learning activities ranging from pond studies to cross-country skiing. Extensive areas of woods, wetlands, and grassland offer visitors the opportunity to see wildlife rarely seen in an urban environment.

History
Built in 1964, the school was originally named Battle Creek after the 1842 battle of Kaposia (KA-PO-ZA), a battle between two American Indian tribes in the area. As part of a city-wide desegregation program Battle Creek became an environmental magnet school in 1987. The school’s environmental education focus is greatly enhanced with students and teachers utilizing the regional park as an outdoor education laboratory.
