2008-2009 Budget Input
Saint Paul Public Schools is making plans for a $10 million budget shortfall for the next school year (2008-09). The Board of Education has collected feedback from staff, parent and the community on the administration's recommendation for dealing with this shortfall. Essentially, $3 million will be covered from the district's reserve funds. The remaining $7 million in reductions are split between schools and centrally funded programs (programs like custodians and maintenance, school nurses, Nutrition Services, Special Education, ELL, administration, etc.)
The Proposed Budget for 2008-09 is available for review here.
You may have heard that the Legislature and Governor agreed to a small increase in K-12 funding for next school year. Early calculations indicate that Saint Paul Public Schools will receive about $2.3 million in new revenue. The Office of Business and Financial Affairs developed a contingency plan for the Board of Education to consider in the event of such an increase. That is outlined on page 57 of the Proposed Budget.
