|  | District to break ground for new alternative learning center 11/16/2006 3:17 PMWho: Superintendent Meria Carstarphen; Nancy Homans, Policy Director for Mayor Coleman;
Principal Peter Atakpu; and student and community representatives
What:
Groundbreaking ceremony for a new alternative learning center (ALC) to
serve approximately 350 Saint Paul students, ages 16-21
When: 9:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17
Where: 1212 University Ave. (University and Griggs Avenues)
Saint Paul
Why:
The new building, scheduled to open in the fall of 2007, will be the
new home for students currently attending ALC Unidale, which is losing
its lease due to redevelopment. In addition to helping students work
toward completing credits required for graduation, the ALC will provide
on-site health and social services as well as career resources. The
academic program will have a strong career focus, with a particular
emphasis on preparing students for careers in trades and industry and
horticulture. The new two-story building will feature cutting-edge
technology, including SMART Boards (interactive whiteboards that are
connected to a computer and a data projector) in every classroom. The
interior of the building will celebrate the cultural diversity of the
student body with messages about success and connectedness in many
colors and languages enhancing the walls and floors.
