Degrees and Certifications:
I’m Ms. Amy. I have been working as an ELL teacher at LEAP for 17 years. I feel blessed to have my dream job working with the best students in the world. I teach Levels 1-4 writing, and I help students think ahead and prepare for the possibility of going on to college.
I love helping students see their full potential and dream big. Creative writing, art, drama, and poetry are some of my favorite things to teach.
On a personal note, I am originally from Southern Manitoba in Canada. I lived in Norway for a number of years and travelled throughout Europe and to Nigeria in West Africa. My husband, Malcolm, is from Nigeria via England and we have two gorgeous children together. We have a nine-year-old daughter named Jadesola and a five-year-old son named Kolawole.
I received my MAEd from Hamline in 2002 and my Doctorate in Education from Hamline. I also teach university ELL courses and graduate education courses at the University of St Thomas and Hamline University. I love what I do and feel the more education I get, the better teacher I can be.
I am the 2015-15 Minnesota Teacher of the Year, the 2015 Rotary Club Teacher of the Year, and 2015 Minnesota Monthly Teacher of the Year. I have been very lucky to travel around the state and the country talking about EL education and how to best serve English learners. I am also very interested in policy and how the laws work to support our learners.
The 3 C’s Mission of my Personal Methodology: Constructivism, Culturally relevant pedagogy, and Community Building.
