The Office of Instructional Services has been awarded a Foreign Language Assistance Program (FLAP) Grant from the U.S. Department of Education for the Chinese Articulation Project.  The three-year grant will provide approximately $680,000 to:
  • expand the existing Chinese language program (located in two middle schools and two high schools) into an elementary school, providing a K-14 articulated program that starts with students in kindergarten and extends through two years of college credit with the College in the Schools program;
  • increase the diversity of students taking Chinese;
  •  coordinate and standardize language instruction across the traditionally separate school structures through shared professional development, districtwide world language standards, and the use of common language instruction approaches and strategies;
  • enrich the Chinese language program through cultural emphasis and experiences, increased parent and community involvement, and use of technology; and
  •  create a replicable model, both within the district and nationally, of an articulated, standards-based foreign language program with support of the University of Minnesota’s Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA), Department of Asian Languages and Literatures; and China Center.
