Homecroft Programming Changes
On March 26, the Committee of the Board of Education meeting approved a recommendation to use Homecroft Elementary School for early learning staff and programming (Early Childhood Family Education and Early Childhood Special Education), combined with The Lab and Rivereast Day Treatment. The proposal goes before the board for approval at its regular meeting on April 15.

On April 8, members of Saint Paul Public Schools staff met with members of the advisory team to discuss in greater detail the plans for Homecroft. Minutes from that meeting are available here along with documents distributed at the meeting including:

Homecroft proposed floor plan,

Narrative about The Lab and RiverEast programs, and;

Additional information about RiverEast.

In brief, the proposal creates a shared space design for an Early Learning Center by consolidating 4-year programs and providing a best practice model ECFE and ECSE collaboration site, along with birth through age 5 program staff; and the plan would house a professional development center for birth through age 5 program staff.

The Lab (formerly known as The Poetry Lab) will be a site at which students use the arts to work on their academic goals through poetry, dance, drama and other arts. Students would be bused from their home school to The Lab for part of a school day, it is not a full-day program.

Rivereast Day Treatment is for students who need therapeutic counseling in connection with their daily classroom learning. Currently, this program is housed in leased space in a non-school setting. Between 20 and 48 students would be served through this program.

By moving out of this leased space, Saint Paul taxpayers will receive a direct savings of $180,000 annually.

On Feb. 9, the Homecroft Community Advisory Team submitted to Superintendent Meria Carstarphen three recommendations for maintaining elementary programming at the school. To view the team's recommendation, click here.The team worked under a tight timeline and developed substantial proposals for the district to consider. They are to be commended for their hard work; team members are listed below. The Superintendent accepted the recommendations and informed the team on Feb. 20 that the district would consider these proposals and make a recommendation to the Board of Education. The Superintendent's letter to team members can be viewed by clicking here.

District administration is looking at the March 18 or March 25 Board of Education as possible targets for action regarding Homecroft. Further updates will be posted to this Web site.
