In contrast to other Beating the Odds schools, fewer Horace Mann students face the same academic or economic challenges than at some of our other “Beating the Odds” schools, but more than 65% of Horace Mann students outperform their peers statewide when matched with similar students. This what makes them a “Beating the Odds school”.
History
The original school was built in 1930, and additions were made in 1939 and 1955. The school was named after Horace Mann, a lawyer, congressman and educator who revolutionized public school organization and teaching. Mann was an advocate for educating all Americans regardless of race or economic status.
AYP, MCA and SAT10 Highlights
- Has made state proficiency targets for NCLB in reading and in math as measured by the MCA-II, and has made adequate yearly progress, for each year of NCLB implementation
- Outperformed the state in reading and in math overall (at the elementary level) and at each grade level, as measured by the percent of students proficient on the 2006 MCA-II
- Achieved SAT10 growth at or above the district average in mathematics for all grade levels and subgroups for which sufficient data are available.
