Last year, Gordon Parks High School won a Sustainable Saint Paul Green Building Award from the City of Saint Paul. The award specifically recognizes Gordon Parks High School as an example of sustainable environmental design principles in an urban setting, and with energy savings benefits.
Saint Paul, Minn.- An independent study of Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) facilitieshas concluded that overall the District's buildings rate favorably whenit comes to their condition, especially compared to some other urbandistricts across the country. The Facilities Conditions Assessment andEducational Adequacy Assessment, which began in September, will helpguide recommendations and decisions regarding SPPS facilities for yearsto come.

"This is a testament to the high expectations ourcommunity and schools have for all aspects of learning, including thelearning environment," said Chief Operations Officer Hitesh Haria.

TheDistrict will use data from the report to create a facilities masterplan, to inform the capital bonding process and to inform theLarge-Scale System Changes process. Areas that were assessed included:capacity, technology, security and physical characteristics.

Asa whole, examiners studied more than 7.3 million square feet of spacespread over 468 acres. The study will not be the sole basis for anyfinal recommendations regarding the future of any buildings orprograms. There are many factors that will be considered as theDistrict continues to examine how it operates and what makes the mostsense structurally now and into the future.

More informationabout the assessments, including a summary of the report and a fullpresentation given at the Feb. 24 Committee of the Board of Educationmeeting, is available here.
