|  | | L’Etoile du Nord - French Immersion Elementary |  | L’Etoile du Nord is a citywide option school and the school district’s
first and only French immersion school. The school helps kindergarten
through sixth-grade students learn both English and French in a warm
and welcoming environment. The school uses the same core academic
program as all other Saint Paul public elementary schools, except that
students learn to comprehend, speak, read and write in both languages.
By sixth grade, all students are functionally bilingual.

History
The
schools started in 1996 at Highland Park Elementary where a French
Immersion option was offered to a limited number of students.
Popularity led to expansion, and in 2002 the program officially became
the school named Lay-twal doo norhh (L’Etoile du Nord) housed
temporarily at the school district’s St. Andrews building. In 2006,
Parkway Elementary School was repurposed and the parkway site became
the first permanent home of Lay-twal doo norhh (L’Etoile du Nord)-
French Immersion School.
AYP, MCA-II and SAT Highlights
Lay-twal
doo norhh (L’Etoile du Nord) students have made adequate yearly
progress for each year of NCLB implementation. They’ve outperformed
similar students across the state in reading and math, as measured by
the percent of students proficient on the 2006 MCA-II and achieved
SAT10 growth at or above the district average in reading for all grade
levels and subgroups.
