North End Elementary School dedicates "pathway to opportunities"

Saint Paul, Minn - Afacelift to the bridge that leads to the main entrance of North EndElementary School is complete, finalizing yet another step in themakeover for University Academies For Boys and Girls. The school willdedicate the new bridge in a celebration Thursday, October 9 beginningat 2 p.m. with tours of the school and a drum performance.

"Thisreally symbolizes the new pathway to opportunities for the futureleaders that we have here at North End," said Principal Hamilton Bell.

NorthEnd is one of several schools that underwent programming changes thattook effect this year. At the University Academies For Boys and Girls,students from kindergarten through third grade participate ingender-specific classes. In grades four through six, studentsparticipate in the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID)program in addition to their regular classes. AVID teaches studyskills, good work habits and promotes college readiness.

The newbridge, which replaces a bland stretch of concrete that familiescrossed on the way to school, is well-lit and serves as more than a wayto get to the building, Bell said.

"It beautifies theneighborhood," he said. "It's a small sign of the big things we'redoing at North End to be a strong part of neighborhood."
