Portfolio Process Overview

  • For many students, their academic aptitude is not reflected well on standardized tests. The portfolio review offers all students the opportunity to be assessed through multiple measures. The portfolio review is a multi-dimensional, collaborative process that provides on overview of the student's gifts, talents, potential and areas of strength.

    The portfolio submission may include: scaled responses, recommendations, work samples, and assessment scores from multiple perspectives.  Responses collected may come from parents, school staff/teachers and community members who are knowledgeable of my child’s strengths and abilities.

    Students who do not attend SPPS schools and reside in the city of St. Paul may submit a portfolio.

    Please Note:The portfolio process was entirely online and the portfolio submission window for the 2016-17 school year has closed and results have been mailed to families.


    In SPPS the portfolio process is an alternative way to identify gifted learners. According to the National Association of Gifted Children (NAGC), using a standardized test may not accurately effectively identify all students.
