SPPS continues to follow precautions in peanut butter recall

Saint Paul, Minn.Update: March 5 – Saint Paul Public Schools received notification today from one of our suppliers that certain lots of a Smucker's brand product were identified in the on-going national peanut butter recall.  As a precautionary measure, Smuckers issued an administrative recall and stated there is no indication of any issues. Saint Paul Public Schools has examined inventory and quarantined any product with those lot numbers and will follow manufacturer's directions.

Update: Jan. 30
– The Minnesota Department of Education instructed schools to hold or recall peanut products received through the school food commodity program from Peanut Corporation of America. Saint Paul Public Schools did not receive peanut products directly through this program.

As of Jan. 27, Nutrition Services received written confirmation from manufacturers that the following items do not contain any peanut butter from recalled brands and they will again be available in cafeterias:
  • Smuckers Uncrustables
  • Peanut butter and jelly bars
  • Peanut butter in secondary cafeterias
  • Kudos brand bars in a la carte serving lines
In addition, Thai peanut sauce will again be available as a menu item.

Update: Jan. 17 – Saint Paul Public Schools does not serve peanut butter brands associated with the brands recalled after a recent salmonella outbreak. But as a result of this health concern the Food and Drug Administration has urged consumers to postpone eating commercial peanut butter while it investigates. Saint Paul Public Schools will not serve peanut butter until more information from the Food and Drug Administration is available. Peanut butter will not be available in serving lines and previously scheduled menu items that contain peanut butter will be changed.

Recalled peanut butter brands are King Nut and Parnell's Pride, distributed by King Nut. The US Blue brand peanut butter purchased by Saint Paul Public Schools is not affiliated with King Nut. In addition, the Smuckers PBJ Sandwich served in some district schools is not made with affected peanut butter. As a precaution, neither product will be served in Saint Paul Public Schools until further notice.
