Saint Paul Public Schools to appoint interim superintendent

Saint Paul, Minn.- The Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) Board of Education will hold aspecial meeting Tuesday, April 28, 7:30 a.m., to appoint Suzanne Kelly,Saint Paul Public Schools Chief of Staff, as the interim superintendentupon completion of Superintendent Meria Carstarphen's contract.

Kellyhas been the District's Chief of Staff since 2007 and has beenresponsible for supporting day-to-day operations of the District onbehalf of the Superintendent, as well as serving as actingsuperintendent during the superintendent's absence.  Prior to joiningSPPS, Kelly served as Chief of Staff for Memphis City Schools and asExecutive Director of Public Affairs for Minneapolis Public Schools. She has strong and long-established ties in the Twin Cities area and iswell respected locally and nationally.

"During this time oftransition, it is critical that we have leadership in place that willsustain the District's forward progress in a calm, steady, andconsistent manner," said SPPS Board Vice Chair Elona Street-Stewart. "Ms. Kelly has the experience to see the District through this time ofchange and transition. As we dedicate our attention to the search forthe next permanent superintendent, we can be assured that Ms. Kellywill continue to lead the District through adoption of the 2009-10budget, action on Large-Scale System Changes and in getting fullyprepared for the 2009-10 school year."

Among consideration forappointment was the desire to select an individual who wouldconcentrate on leading the District through transition and not pursueappointment as the permanent superintendent.

"I am honored tohave the opportunity to help lead Saint Paul Public Schools during thisperiod of transition," Kelly said. "Dr. Carstarphen - with the supportof the Board, District staff, and numerous external partners - hascreated significant momentum around closing the achievement gap andpositioning the District for long-term success. My goal will be tosustain that momentum and provide leadership stability that will allowthe Board to focus on selecting Saint Paul's next permanentsuperintendent."

The Board hopes to have a permanent superintendent in place during school year 2009-10.
