Education today announced the unanimous approval of the 2006-2007
general funds operating budget for the Saint Paul Public School
District.
The budget, totaling more than $450 million, included a shortfall of $10 million as a result of funding levels not keeping pace with inflation and rising costs. This deficit resulted in a number of personnel cuts, including the non-renewal of 38 teaching positions.
"The budget approved by the School Board tonight contains some painful cuts for everyone, but we've done everything we can to keep the cuts away from the classroom," said Elona Street-Stewart, chair of the Saint Paul Public School Board. "We're looking at a number of options to ensure we can avoid more drastic funding cuts in the future.
