Media Release Office of Community Relations Contact: Howie Padilla - (651) 767-8104 Saint Paul, Minn – If students at two Saint Paul Public Schools want careers in biotechnical fields, millions of dollars from a federal grant awarded to the district this month promises to give them a boost. Washington Technology Middle and Arlington High students will learn to become Bio-SMART.
The Bio-SMART grant awards $2.19 million to the district this year. The total amount awarded to the district over the next three years is expected to exceed $5.9 million. The funds will bring an emphasis on bioscience to Washington Technology Middle and Arlington High School.
The purpose of the project is to expand access to career paths for students who have been traditionally underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. The grant also is part of a national research project to test the curriculum from the middle to high school levels.
Through the Bio-SMART program, students can explore careers as paramedics, nursing assistants, pharmacists. Students have the opportunity to learn about becoming biomedical engineers, electronics technicians, webpage designers, or health industry technical writers.
This is an opportunity for the district to create high-tech high schools that meet the needs of today’s students as they consider their post-secondary and career options. Students and families interested in Arlington or Washington should contact the schools or the student placement center, secondary office at 651-632-3761.
Arlington Senior High School is located at 1495 Rice St., 651-293-6900; Washington Technology Middle School is located at 1041 Marion St., 651-293-8830.
