Saint Paul Public Schools takes Read for the Record districtwide

Saint Paul, Minn.- Saint Paul, Minn - For the first time, Saint Paul Public Schools istaking the national Read for the Record campaign district-wideThursday, with Superintendent Meria Carstarphen Minnnesota Departmentof Education Commisioner Alice Seagren leading the way. The two willjoin hundreds of thousands of children and adults across the country inreading Corduroy as they work to increase awareness about theimportance of reading to children.

"Like one of our key goals inour Strategic Plan for Continued Excellence, this event helps toilluminate the importance of reading to our children and teaching themgood reading habits," Carstarphen said. "If our children don't get agood start at literacy, they are fighting an uphill battle when itcomes to educational success."

A key focus for SPPS is to haveall children reading at or above proficiency levels by the time theyfinish third-grade. As part of this year's campaign, all SPPSpre-kingergarten and kindergarten teachers will be given the children'sbook Corduroy to read to their students. In past years, several schoolshave taken part in the campaign, but this year all SPPS elementaryschools will participate.

The national event is organized inpart by Jumpstart, a national nonprofit organization that engagespreschool children from low-income communities in an intensive earlyeducation program, and the Pearson Foundation.
