Washington Tech. students Study with Jane Goodall Institute primate expert


Saint Paul, Minn.- Dr. Virginia Landau of the Jane Goodall Institute will conduct atwo-day workshop with students from Washington Technology MagnetSchool, 1014 Marion St. in Saint Paul. She will be at Washington onTuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 25 and 26, working directly with students.Also on Tuesday, about 30 students in an after-school program willobserve Como Zoo's primates with Dr. Landau, and she will offer alecture at the zoo. Dr. Landau will discuss characteristics andpersonalities of apes, and the similarities they share with humans. Shealso will talk about chimpanzees living in the wild and living incaptivity.

Specific media opportunities for Tuesday's event at Como Zoo are as follows:
  • 3 - 3:45 p.m. - Como Zoo Primate Building - 30-plus students observe and discuss the zoo's primates with Dr. Landau,
  • 4 - 4:30 p.m. - Como Zoo Auditorium - Dr. Landau lecture followed by a Q & A session.

Dr.Landau is vice president of ChimpanZoo: Research, Education andEnrichment Program, based in Tucson, Ariz., which works to improve thelives of captive chimpanzees through consultation, environmentalenrichment and research.

The program at Como Zoo is part ofWashington Technology Magnet's Wings Program. Washington offers diverseafter school programs on Monday through Thursday afternoons. Como Zoois in the second quarter of partnering and offering after schoolprograms for Washington students. The Wings Program offers a variety ofafter school programs like woodshop, rocket making, K'Nex construction,stock market exploration, and self-improvement.
