Central High School students Liz Derr and Mattie Erstad, members of the Saint Paul Stars synchronized swimming team, took first in the Regional Synchronized Swimming Championships in St. Louis earlier this month.

As a result, their team, which is sponsored by Saint Paul Community Education, qualified to compete in the National Synchronized Swimming Championships in Indianapolis in June.

Erstad, a ninth-grader who swims competitively for Central High School, also took first place with her 14 to 15 age group duet qualifying for the Nationals.

Derr, a 10th-grader who also plays volleyball for Central, took first place with her trio and second place with her solo qualifying both for the Nationals.

Saint Paul Stars Synchro practices at the Harding and Humboldt pools and are coached by Harding High School teacher Vicky Knutsen.
