As the Assistant Principal at The Heights Community School, one of my priorities this fall will be building positive relationships with students and families, as well as strengthening the school’s partnerships with the community. Recently I was the School Improvement Specialist for Sharon Freeman’s Vertical Team. I am very familiar with The Heights Community School. During the last two years, I supported the school’s leadership team, assisted in developing the school improvement plan, and helped set up strategies to increase student achievement. Prior to that I worked at Maxfield Elementary as a third grade teacher, Teacher on Special Assignment, and ALC/EDL Site Leader.
I grew up on the East Side of Saint Paul. I am a proud product of the Saint Paul Public Schools, I went to Parkway Elementary, Battle Creek Middle School, and I am a proud graduate of Harding High School. Go Knights! I also feel very fortunate to work for the district that fostered my love of education. It is truly an honor to be able to assist in leading an elementary school on the East Side.
I value collaboration. As a member of Sharon Freeman’s MTSS Vertical Team, I worked not only with our Vertical Team members but also with departments and schools in SPPS.
My door is always open. If a student, teacher, parent, or community partner has a perspective to share, please stop by!

“As we all know, there are people that we come across, at differing points in our career, that seem to possess an “it” factor. Mr. Bjoraker is one of these people. John goes above and beyond the call of duty. He takes on every task with a fresh, innovative approach, which is rooted within relationship. This is one of John’s most impressive strengths. His ability to build trust, and stay within relationship, while pushing the work that needs to get done, has allowed John to move the schools in reaching their goals.” - Kristin Reilly
“John is very collaborative with adults by honoring their strengths, knowledge, and experiences and is often asked to support leadership teams. His knowledge, understanding and use of a data process, allows him to guide the leadership teams to use data to make decisions. He is willing to “jump in” whenever he is asked and can also survey a situation and support when needed. John is an outstanding team player.” - Sue Braithwaite
