The Office of Multilingual Learning (MLL) oversees and supports programming and services for English Learners (ELs) and Dual Language/Immersion programs across the district. SPPS multilingual programs strive to ensure equity and equal access to grade level standards and curriculum providing students with opportunites to reach their highest potential.
SPPS provides a system-wide approach to programming for ELs through cross departmental and district collaboration. This framework provides ELs access to rigorous grade-level content standards. English language development is a critical focus and should be addressed by all educators.
ELs, also known as emergent bilingual students, bring a wealth of knowledge to our schools. SPPS strives to honor and learn from the linguistic and cultural capital that students and their families bring to the school community.
English language learners are in fact emergent bilinguals. That is, through school and through acquiring English, these children become bilingual, able to continue to function in their home language as well as in English, their new language and that of schools.
