The Excel Program — which places students in half-grades as an alternative to retention — has shown clear signs of helping students catch up in reading and math, according to the findings of University of Minnesota researchers released in a 31-page report today (Friday, Sept. 20).

The committee charged with making a recommendation to the Saint Paul Board of Education about which Saint Paul public school will be re-named after the late U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone will do so at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, in Auditorium A of the school district’s Main Administration Building, 360 Colborne St., Sain Paul.

Thanks to a four-year, $368,578 grant from the U.S. Department of Education, hundreds of students in grades 6, 7 and 8 at Saint Paul’s Humboldt Junior High and Wilson Middle School will soon be attending plays at the Guthrie, the Old Log and 12 other Twin Cities theaters.
