School board expected to adopt budget
6/24/2005 2:00 PM

The Saint Paul Board of Education is expected to adopt a contingency budget for the 2005-06 school year at its meeting Tuesday, June 28.

The contingency plan, which was presented to the board by Superintendent Harvey in May, includes reductions of $6.5 million to school budgets and $8.8 million to central service budgets.

Earlier in the spring, school site councils decided how to address each school's budget deficit. The plan to reduce centrally funded service budgets was developed with help from a district budget team and input from school site councils and the public. It is considered a contingency plan because the district's budget situation could change, depending on what happens at the legislature.

If the legislature passes a K-12 funding bill that provides additional resources, the district will work to restore cuts to school and districtwide service budgets. If no budget is passed, the district could be required to make additional reductions later this year.
