Saint Paul Board of Education Approves 2002-03 Budget
6/25/2002 9:55 AM

The Saint Paul Public Schools Board of Education this evening approved the 2002-03 school year budget. The total $551 million budget includes $20 million in reductions for the coming year that is expected to result in the elimination of about 400 staff positions districtwide.

Last week, the Board of Education voted to reverse a change in transportation services for the 2002-03 school year that would have saved the school district $2.7 million as part of the
$20 million reduction plan. Rather than cut transportation services, the school board voted to use $1.7 million from the district's reserve funds and make an additional $1 million in cuts to other centrally funded budgets.

The remaining $17.3 million in cuts include:
• $10 million in reductions to school budgets as decided by school site councils,
• $2.4 million in program/department consolidation,
• $1.6 million in centrally-funded instructional services,
• $2.9 million in support services, and
• $330,000 in student services and programs.
