| Committee to recommend school for Wellstone name 6/9/2003 11:00 AMThe committee charged with making a recommendation to the Saint Paul Board of Education about which Saint Paul public school will be re-named after the late U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone will do so at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, in Auditorium A of the school district’s Main Administration Building, 360 Colborne St., Sain Paul. The committee, comprised of of Wellstone’s son, Mark, a teacher at Humboldt Senior High School; state Sen. Mee Moua; and Shawn Huckleby, a Saint Paul parent who is active in the school district, visited three schools The schools are: Homecroft Elementary (1845 Sheridan Ave.), North End Elementary (27 E. Germain Ave.) and Saturn/River Front Academy (65 E. Kellogg Blvd.), Following Sen. Wellstone’s death in October 2002, Superintendent Patricia Harvey received calls from several principals inquiring about naming their schools after the senator. To determine which school would receive the moniker, an application process was developed with input from the Wellstone family. The applications included questions about each school’s climate and culture, what values each school possesses that are associated with Paul Wellstone’s legacy and what types of activities the schools might undertake to accomplish an annual event to honor the senator’s legacy. The committee is scheduled to visit the three schools in May. Shortly after the visits, the committee will make a recommendation to the Saint Paul Board of Education about which school is currently best positioned to carry on Sen. Wellstone’s tradition and his name. |
