The 2002-03 school year is winding down, but it’s not too late for parents to help their children finish the year strong. And it’s not too early to begin planning for next year.

To help parents do both, Saint Paul Public Schools will hold Family TIES (Together In Educating Children) from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 22, at John A. Johnson Achievement Plus Elementary, 740 York Ave., Saint Paul.

The event, which brings many school district resources together, is aimed at making it convenient for parents to find the right resources for their children.

“We want to make it as easy as possible for parents to get their children the right kind of help,” said Arty Dorman, director of the Family and Community Involvement Office, “so we’ve brought many programs and services together in one place, on one night.”

Topics that will be discussed include:

- How to make summer school work for your child;

- Discussing children’s experiences with the Title I program;

- How to get involved in your child’s school by volunteering, mentoring or participating in parent organizations and site councils; and

- How to prepare children for kindergarten.

The Student Placement Center, Special Education and the Office of Educational Equity also will be available to answer questions and provide service.

Interpreters, free child care and refreshments will be provided. For more information, call the Family and Community Involvement Office at (651) 767-8312.
