| Student recipes to be featured at Cafe Latte, added to school lunch menu 5/6/2005 12:45 PMOne question Shardae Moss and the Mulitcultural Foods Class at Cleveland Middle School won't have to worry about in school next year is Did you bring enough for the whole class? Their entree salad recipes were voted the best of the Saint Paul Public Schools "Kids' Choice Entree Salad Recipe Contest" and will be added to the school district's lunch menu next year. Shardae Moss, a student at Longfellow Humanities Magnet, submitted Mama Nita's Good for the Soul Salad. The Mulitcultural Foods Class at Cleveland Middle School submitted Cleveland Salad. Both recipes received resounding thumbs up from the panel of students during taste tests held at Cafe Latte in Saint Paul. More than 300 students submitted recipes for the contest. Entries included "Thai Peanut Salad," "Flying Farmer Chicken Salad" and "Couscous and Fruit." The student judges tried the top 10 and picked their favorites based on taste and appeal; originality and creativity; nutritional value; ease of preparation; and cost. In addition to having their salad entrees added to the school district's menu, Shardae Moss and the Mulitcultural Foods Class at Cleveland Middle School will receive prizes from Whole Foods Market, a contest sponsor; they will throw out the first pitch at an upcoming Saint Paul Saints game; and their salads will be added to the Cafe Latte menu during the month of May. According the Jean Ronnei, director of Nutrition Services for the school district, the contest was an effort to localize the flavor of school lunches while encouraging kids to try different foods. "Saint Paul Public Schools is committed to offering menu choices that reflect our students. As Saint Paul changes, so will our menu," said Ronnei. "I am impressed by the quality of the entries we received. Saint Paul sure does have good taste." Runner-up recipes included: Chicken Cabbage Crunch, Claire Ella Hinkley, Capitol Hill Magnet; Thai Peanut Salad, Mama Yang;, Arlington Senior High; For more information about Saint Paul Public Schools Nutrition Services, visit www.sppscafe.org. |
