| District to break ground for new alternative learning center 11/16/2006 3:17 PMWho: Superintendent Meria Carstarphen; Nancy Homans, Policy Director for Mayor Coleman; Principal Peter Atakpu; and student and community representatives What: Groundbreaking ceremony for a new alternative learning center (ALC) to serve approximately 350 Saint Paul students, ages 16-21 When: 9:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17 Where: 1212 University Ave. (University and Griggs Avenues) Saint Paul Why: The new building, scheduled to open in the fall of 2007, will be the new home for students currently attending ALC Unidale, which is losing its lease due to redevelopment. In addition to helping students work toward completing credits required for graduation, the ALC will provide on-site health and social services as well as career resources. The academic program will have a strong career focus, with a particular emphasis on preparing students for careers in trades and industry and horticulture. The new two-story building will feature cutting-edge technology, including SMART Boards (interactive whiteboards that are connected to a computer and a data projector) in every classroom. The interior of the building will celebrate the cultural diversity of the student body with messages about success and connectedness in many colors and languages enhancing the walls and floors. | ||||
