Saint Paul Public Schools Board of Education Chooses Meria Carstarphen As Superintendent

Saint Paul, Minn. — The Saint Paul Public Schools Board of Education today announced they have offered the position of Superintendent of Saint Paul Public Schools to Meria Carstarphen. She has accepted the position, pending contract negotiations.

Meria Carstarphen is currently the Chief Accountability Officer for the District of Columbia Public Schools, a position she has held since 2004.  In this diverse urban district, Ms. Carstarphen is responsible for all school sites, all students, all assistant superintendents and all school principals, as well as a budget of $350 million of the district's $900 million budget. "I'm thrilled to have the chance to lead a district like Saint Paul," said Carstarphen. "I'm looking forward to continuing the success this district has had in recent years and ensuring every single student gets the world-class education they deserve."

Carstarphen was chosen by the Saint Paul Public Schools Board of Education from a field of five candidates during an intense process involving meetings with community groups, a public forum, and interviews with the School Board.

"We're confident that Meria Carstarphen is the best person to lead Saint Paul Public Schools and build on the success we've experienced," said Elona Street-Stewart, Saint Paul Public School Board Chair. "It was a tough decision, and all five candidates brought amazing experience and talent to the table, but we ultimately felt that she would be the best fit."
