Saint Paul, Minn – A group of Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) students are set to show that they can answer the nation’s call for more highly trained engineers as they flaunt a year’s worth of work Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at the Grand Opening celebration of the new IDEA Lab located on the campus of Saint Paul College.

The IDEA (Invention, Design, Engineering and Art) Lab is a project initiated by SPPS this school year in partnership with Saint Paul College and the Science Museum of Minnesota. It is intended to get students engaged through Project Lead the Way, a public / private partnership to graduate more high school students into engineering fields. Students in Project Lead the Way learn in an enriched environment and have the opportunity for dual enrollment at SPPS and Saint Paul College.

What: IDEA Lab Grand Opening
Where: Saint Paul College, 235 Marshall Avenue, Saint Paul, MN
When: Wednesday, May 21, 2008, Opening Remarks at 3 p.m. Event goes until 5 p.m.

The showcase of student work includes a new flour scoop created for a local bakery and a collapsible crutch made to help a person with a prosthetic leg. Also present at the event will be products from two FIRST Robotics teams and the Supermileage car, which is competing today in Brainerd.

The IDEA Cooperative is made up of students from Johnson High School, Harding High School and Humboldt High School. This diverse team of students works on design and invention projects on weeknights and Saturdays. The cooperative is funded by the National Science Foundation and is intended to inspire and support student populations that are underrepresented in engineering at post-secondary and professional levels.

The event provides an opportunity to learn about engineering and design opportunities available for SPPS students, as well as SPPS Career Pathways: Medical Health Sciences, Construction Trades, Business Computer Technology and Project Lead the Way Pre-Engineering.
