| Office of the Superintendent | | The Superintendent is the chief executive officer of the Saint Paul
Public Schools and is charged, under the direction of the Board of
Education, with all aspects of administration of the school district.
The
day-to-day work of the Superintendent focuses on providing three types
of leadership for the school district: instructional, organizational
and community-wide.
As the district's senior instructional
leader, the Superintendent leads an ongoing effort to define what
students will need to know and be able to do in order to become
productive, ethical adult citizens. Guided by this understanding, the
Superintendent works with educators throughout the district to identify
the research-based educational practices that will help all Saint Paul
students achieve these high standards. These practices are implemented
at the site and districtwide levels through the creation of
high-quality curriculum and professional development that is sustained,
intensive, collaborative and content-based.
As the Saint Paul
Public Schools chief executive officer, the Superintendent provides
organizational leadership for a district that serves more than 41,000
students and their families.
The Superintendent works to ensure
that this service is provided in the most efficient and cost-effective
way possible. In addition, the Superintendent ensures that the district
adheres to all applicable local, state and federal laws, regulations
and standards. An ongoing focus of the Superintendent's organizational
leadership is the decentralization of decision making authority and
responsibility to the site level, transforming the Saint Paul Public
Schools from a single "school system" into a networked "system of schools." The Superintendent also provides community-wide leadership in a number of ways, including serving as the public voice of the school district administration on a wide array of educational issues.
The
Superintendent meets extensively with student, parent, staff and
community groups and interacts often with the media. The Superintendent
also develops working partnerships with a broad range of community
leaders to meet school and community needs. In addition, the
Superintendent also leads extensive efforts to raise additional
financial resources to support school improvement from public and
private sources.
