Introduction to Nursing Assistant

Course Description:

Nursing assistants give personal care to patients in hospitals and nursing homes. They work under the direction of nurses and doctors.

In this class you will learn:

  • How to provide personal care such as bathing, grooming, assisting with elimination needs, dressing, and feeding
  • How to develop better listening and communication skills
  • 450 new vocabulary words dealing with the body, medicine and medical equipment. 
  • The roles and responsibilities of a nursing assistant and the rights of patients
  • How to take and record measurements such as blood pressure, temperature, pulse, height, and weight
  • Patient safety and how to protect yourself against injury
  • Use of various medical equipment

This is only an introduction class, NOT a certification class. If you successfully complete the class you will get a recommendation from the teacher to move onto a certified nursing assistant training program.

Requirements for successful completion of the class:

  • 80% passing on weekly quizzes and final exam
  • 90% attendance
  • 100% participation while in class

Requirments of the job:

  •  Must be able to pass a background check 
  • Able to walk/stand for long periods of time
  • Able to lift 30 lbs
  • Able to provide direct care to patients

Next steps and additional career information:

Upon completion of this introductory course students will take a Nursing Assistant Training (NAT) program through Inver Hills Community College. Inver Hills program will prepare students for the NNAAP exam or the NA/HHA exam for certification as a nursing assistant or nursing assistant/home health aide in Minnesota.
